[Non-YCLA Event] Theater Weekend in San Diego 2015 (February 13-15)
Yale Professor Murray Biggs, a popular lecturer in Yale’s English Department who is now semi-retired, is organizing a “Weekend of Theater in San Diego” program this coming February 13-15.

This is an exclusive offer to Yale alumni and their associates to join a first‐time theater weekend in San Diego led by semi‐retired Yale Professor Murray Biggs, now Special Lecturer for the AYA in English and Theater Studies. Although offered in consultation with the AYA about its own theater programs (also led by  Professor Biggs every year since 1991) in the United States, Canada, England and Ireland, and modeled on the AYA’s theater weekends in New York, this is a new venture arranged by Professor Biggs himself to accommodate the increasing demand by Yale alumni for such theater experiences in other major US cities.

Although San Diego has long been a theater destination, its playgoing scene has expanded energetically in recent years, and the new weekend program takes full advantage of the substantial scripts being professionally staged in lesser known venues.
On Friday evening, February 13th, the group will see Shakespeare’s late play Cymbeline (itself a less familiar work) performed by the Intrepid Shakespeare Company, a theater enterprise specially devoted to Shakespeare. (Its recent Much Ado About Nothing earned dazzling reviews.) This is followed on Saturday evening the 14th with Stephen Karam’s Sons of the Prophet, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, performed by the Cygnet Theater in San Diego’s Old Town. The program ends on Sunday afternoon with the Thirties American classic by Kaufman and Hart, You Can’t Take It With You, at Lamb’s Players Theater on Coronado Island. (This last site is a reminder of how much else there is to see and do in the San Diego area, not least, of course, Balboa Park and all it includes, for which participants might well want to schedule an extra night or two in the city.)

The weekend begins at 3:30 pm on Friday, February 13th, with round‐the‐room introductions and Professor Biggs’s opening lecture on Cymbeline, and finishes after the matinee on Sunday 15th. There will be a full seminar meeting on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30.

As with all Professor Biggs’s theater seminars, participants will be sent texts of the plays in advance and asked to read them in preparation for his lectures on them. Each production except the last is followed the morning after by an animated group discussion of how the performance has realized the play itself. One of these “reviews” is led by an actor in, or a director of, one of the productions. Since the group is restricted to about 30 people, everyone has a chance to speak up.

The hotel chosen for the San Diego weekend is the Best Western in the heart of Old Town, a two‐minute walk from the Cygnet Theater. Van transportation will be provided to and from the other theaters for those who need it. The cost of the weekend includes Friday and Saturday night hotel accommodation, breakfast, light refreshments at seminar meetings, a group dinner on Friday evening and a group lunch on Sunday on
Coronado Island, transportation as above, copies of the three plays, and the best available seats at each theater. (All the theaters are of modest size.)
Date: February 13-15
Price: The cost of the program is $725 per person for double occupancy and $875 for single occupancy. For locals not requiring hotel rates, the weekend will cost $450 per person.
A non-refundable deposit of $175 per person is due by November 24 to secure a place on the program, with balance due by December 31.  Cancellation not later than January 31 will earn a refund of 50% of the total cost.  After January 31 no refund is possible.  The deposit itself is not returnable.

Checks should be made out to Educational Theater Weekends and mailed to 36 Morse Street, Hamden, CT 06517‐3210. All payments will be acknowledged by e‐mail. Questions should be addressed directly to Professor Biggs at murray.biggs@yale.edu, or phone (203) 432‐0391.
