[Non-YCLA Event] Annie Cohen-Solal—Mark Rothko: Toward the Light in the ChapelI

In conversation with Jori Finkel at the Skirball Museum

On Thursday, March 19, at 8:00 p.m., we invite you to join esteemed writer and academic Annie Cohen-Solal (Sartre: A Life) as she discusses her new biography of artist Mark Rothko, which is being published by Yale University Press. She will be joined by arts reporter Jori Finkel (Art Newspaper, New York Times). A Q&A and book signing will follow the program.

Within just a few decades, Rothko went from being a student at Yale—where he felt marginalized for his Russian Jewish origins—to becoming a renowned painter hailed as a pioneer by critics. Cohen-Solal’s fascinating book draws from exclusive archival material to tell this unlikely story of how a young immigrant became a crucial transforming agent of the art world—one whose legacy prevails to this day.
