Yale, MIT and Princeton Present: LA HighTable with Oliver Sicat

We invite Yale, MIT, and Princeton alums to join us for the Los Angeles High Table, a new every-other-month series aimed at showcasing exciting work by dynamic speakers in an intimate setting.  We especially welcome established alums in fields relevant to the talk and younger alums in all fields.  This event features a talk by Oliver Sicat on innovative approaches to combining technology and student-driven learning to close the college completion gap.

Date: Sunday, May 17th

Time: 1pm – 3:30pm

Location: We are lucky to have this event at the Palos Verdes home of Anu Sood, an MIT alum. The address will be provided the Thursday prior to the event.

Price: $5.  We also request you contribute a dish or drink to our potluck. Suggestions below.

Event format: 30 minutes mingling, 60 minute High Table Program featuring Oliver Sicat, 60 minutes networking and discussion post-talk with refreshments.

About the issue: Across the nation, there is a gap in college graduation rates between low- and high-income families. Census data shows that 73% of students in high-income families (>$100,000) complete a four-year college degree, as compared to just 10% of students in low-income families (<$33,000).

About the speaker: Oliver Sicat is the CEO of Ednovate, a nonprofit charter management organization committed to closing the college completion gap by providing its students – many of whom are living in poverty and will be the first in their families to attend college – with a rigorous, competency-based education that blends technology and teacher-led instruction. Ednovate’s flagship public high school, USC Hybrid High, is piloting a cutting-edge instructional model that gives students greater ownership over their learning and allows them to move at their own pace through a teacher created and curated online curriculum. Students progress based on their mastery of content, rather than hours of instruction. Ednovate, which is preparing to open its second high school this fall, is diverging from the traditional “factory model of education” and putting its students on a path to excel in college, career, and life.

Oliver is a graduate of the University of Southern California and holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University.
