[Non-YCLA Event] Fourth Annual Theater Weekend in San Diego
February 16-18, 2018, with Professor Murray Biggs

I hope you’ll join me for our next winter theater weekend in San Diego. The program is
designed not only for Yale alumni but for anyone else interested in high-quality theater
around the country. Expected participation: about 30.
This weekend is a 48-hour theatrical immersion starting at 3 pm on Friday, February 16,
and ending after the Sunday matinee. It begins with my introduction to the Friday
evening play, a new version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. This will be staged at the
renowned Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. A group dinner at our hotel is included.
Saturday morning, 9:30-11:30, is given to a group review of last night’s production,
followed by my lead-in to the evening performance of a very unusual new play, Vietgone,
by the Vietnamese American writer Qui Nguyen, at the downtown San Diego Repertory
Theatre. Sunday morning, 9:30-11:30, begins with a group review of this production and
ends with a preface to our afternoon performance: Camping with Henry and Tom, Mark
St. Germain’s witty reimagining of a camping trip that Warren Harding as President took
with Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. We’ll see this at Lamb’s Players Theatre on
Coronado Island, after an optional lunch at the legendary “Hotel Del”.
Our venue will again be the Hacienda-style Best Western Plus (a charming haciendalike
“village”) in the heart of Old Town and its Mexican scene.
The charge for double occupancy is $985 per person and $1,150 for single occupancy.
For those not requiring hotel accommodation, the cost is $820 per person. These are total prices. (Theater tickets will be discounted for those with subscriptions to any of our theaters.)
